Londonderry, New Hampshire
Eric Bonnette traveled up to New
England for a reunion of fellow William and Mary teammates, and last Sunday
ventured up to Londonderry, NH for the Millenium Mile. The four year old
race boasts a field of World Championship qualifiers in cross country
in brothers Matt and Andy Downin, and a many time All-American at Michigan,
John Mortimer. Eric went out strong, and at 800 meters found himself up
in the front pack, taking a shot at the win with a solid 2:00 split, followed
nicely with a 3:01 through the 3/4 mark. He held on admirably to take
5th in a personal best of 4:04, two seconds off of Andy Downin, 2001 USATF
champ in the 1500, and two seconds in front of two time World Cross qualifier
Matt Downin. A solid performance, that will hopefully be the catalyst
for an even better winter and spring of racing!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! As you can see, we had some fun of our own - with our
own Max the Dog (Grinch Who Stole Christmas reference). But before everyone
celebrated Christmas day, some members of PhillyTC took the roads for
some holiday racing fun. And did the team receive an early Christmas present!
Our three boys grabbed places among the top four! The only person to break
up our trio was Maurits Van Der Deen (a.k.a. Jean Claude Van Deiter) of
the Netherlands who has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon
twice over this Fall. Not bad company! We know you're getting tired of
hearing this, but Bryan Poerner was the overall winner in 15:15. Somebody
stop him!
More importantly, Eric Bonnette showed that he is rounding
into shape - finishing second in 15:32! And Mike Walker returned to racing,
finishing 4th in 16:10. This was a deceptively hilly, twisty course. Great
Job!

It's a rather quiet time of year usually - cross country is over for many
people and indoor track certainly hasn't begun for most distance runners.
The team decided not to go to USATF Club Cross Country Nationals this
year, so getting workouts in right around Philadelphia was the logical
alternative.
On Saturday, Bryan Poerner, Timothy Callinan, and Eric
Bonnette took part in the first annual Camden Street Run 5k. The race
course was obviously treacherous - as the heavy snowfall the Philadelphia
area received the previous Thursday wreaked havoc on streets and paths.
But the race must go on - and so it did. And when the finishing places
were sorted out, our very own Bryan Poerner helped melt the snow by continuing
his hot streak. Bryan outran Sammy Chelimo to take first place in 15:34.
Philly's Eric Bonnette rounded out the winner's circle in finishing third
in a time of 15:59. Finally, Tim Callinan solidified the team scored victory
for PhillyTC - in running 16:22 for fourth. Nice race guys! Anything above
simply not pulling your hamstring in the freezing cold temperatures, snow,
and black ice is a victory on this day!
The second half of the weekend saw Edward Callinan luck
out with much better weather conditions - if not necessarily the easiest,
flattest course on which to race. Edward placed sixth at the 25th annual
Brian's Run in West Chester. Edward completed the 10k course in 30:28.
Although not in the winner's circle, Edward's run is still good representation
for Philly - as Brian's Run has been a staple for a challenging course
and an annually deep field.
So the boys have digested their Thanksgiving turkeys and are training
in earnest. The rest of December will be pretty quiet on the racing front
- as all runners need time to complete basic training. But keep checking
the site. We will give you a training update before the month of December
is out. And don't forget about the message board! You can access it at
the top right hand corner of the home page. Tell your friends about Philly
TC!
AND TO RUNNERS AND NON-RUNNERS ALIKE - HAVE A VERY, MERRY
CHRISTMAS AND A JOYOUS NEW YEAR! WE CAN NEVER THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR YOUR
SUPPORT AND WILL LOOK TO RAISE THE BAR EVEN HIGHER FOR PHILLY IN 2003!

Philadelphia Track Club reaped the benefits of placing runners in new
categories for the first time in the team's existence! Johnny Marino,
the teams only masters runner at the youthful age of 41, finished 25th
overall in the high level Rothman 8k to run 26:00! Nice race, Johnny!
There are reports that the girl's relay team, which competed in the Citizen's
Bank Philadelphia Marathon, finished 1st overall too! But as the team
news went to print, this information could not be verified. We're sure
that the girls brought home the bacon.
As for the men's scoring team, Philadelphia TC was handed
a mixed bag. The talk of the town (especially center city Philadelphia,
where, as far as we know, he was the first Philadelphia finisher) continues
to be Bryan Poerner. Poerner merely chopped down his 5 mile PR by another
estimated 22 seconds (the conversion from 8k to 5 miles is estimated at
8 seconds)! Bryan's 5 mile PR this summer was 24:59. Today, Bryan ran
24:29 for 8k - or 24:37 for 5 miles! Keep it going, Bry. Also running
under 24:30 was Ted Callinan - who led the team with a 3rd place finish
overall in 24:06. Ted took home a big paypack. He is buying drinks this
weekend, so make sure and drop him a line.
Making a return to racing after a lengthy layoff, Pete
Dougherty dusted off, cleared the cobwebs, and got a race under his belt
- running 26:34 to finish 41st overall. The men's 2nd and 3rd finishers
placed 21st and 22nd overall.
Brian Gallagher ran 25:23, while Eric Bonnette ran 25:35 respectively.
This year, the day of the Philadelphia Marathon and Rothman
8k is marking the end of the season as a team for PhillyTC. The team is
continuing to grow - and has some exciting things on the horizon.
They include the following:
1. The formation and organization of a girl's team.
2. A solid DMR relay team - with legs including Brian Gallagher, Marc
Cianfrani, and Matt Kalwsinski.
3. A first attempt at the full marathon distance by the likes of Ted Callinan
and Bryan Poerner before long. Also a solid marathon training group headed
by Yoda himself.
And plenty more! The team will be in full swing after
Christmas. And even before then, there are two tentative races - with
Bryan Poerner running the early Princeton indoor meet on December 8th
and Ted Callinan running Brian's Run in West Chester the same day. So
be sure to check the Web site for the complete updated race schedule!
That's all for now, folks. HAVE A GREAT
THANKSGIVING AND THANKS FOR KEEPING UP TO DATE!

Check out this months issue of Runner's World. Mike and Bryan sneak their
heads into a shot of that starting line from the Philly Distance Run.
We think it is them anyhow. See image to right.
Mike Walker set a daunting precedent back in October when he agreed to
travel and race in Rochester the weekend after - and more importantly
on the tail end of - his honeymoon! Mike's dedication that weekend won't
soon be forgotten.
Brian Gallagher will have to keep that in mind - as he
and Megan Carroll were engaged on Saturday night in Philadelphia! CONGRATULATIONS,
BRIAN AND MEGAN!!! We're happy for you! You guys are great! After celebrating
and drinking Saturday night away, Brian made it out the door with the
group for the Sunday run. So it looks like he is prepared to match Mike's
efforts. Good luck, guys, in your new life together. Frawley wants to
know where the Philly TC table is going to be located at the reception.
And Poerner would like to take a look at the menu for obvious reasons
- what a pain!
We are t-minus 2 weeks and counting until the Rothman
8k. Don't forget to come on out and watch some great racing - both in
the Rothman 8k and the Philadelphia Marathon! Cheer for the team which
holds the name of the city!
In actual racing news, Tim and Ted Callinan ran the Haddonfield
Road Race 5k on Saturday morning as a small tune-up for Rothman. Despite
an ailing knee and plantar fascia, Tim was able to complete the windy,
hilly course in 16:08 - finishing 7th overall in a deep field (which included
four former NCAA DIII All-Americans; two of whom were also national champions).
Ted finished 1st in a time of 14:54.

Bryan Poerner continues to improve with each passing week - building on
the high level of fitness he established in the early part of this past
summer! Bryan raced solo this past Sunday at the Mayor's Cup cross country
meet in Boston. With a national (actually even international - as this
year's winner, like last year's runner-up, hails from the Emeral Isle)
field taking to the line at a muddy Franklin Park, Bryan was able to finish
22nd overall in race that had a total of 198 finishers!
On an 8k course which was described by one poster on Letsrun.com's
message board as "slow by a good 30 seconds due to a lot of mud and
puddles," Bryan finished in a time of 25:12. This estimation of the
time difference is extremely accurate. Keith Kelly, graduate of Providence
College and Irish national, won the 2002 edition of the Mayor's Cup in
23:48 - compared with last year's winning time of 23:29. With that in
mind, Philly TC could have seen Bryan finish the race with a time in the
24:40s - which would have provided him with his 3rd PR for the distance
in the last 5 months! Way to go, Bryan! With super solid performances
in both Rochester and Boston - it is clear Bryan can be described as a
cross-country "mudder." Ironically, that's a compliment in cross
country.
Bryan's great performances at the 8k distance will certainly
come in handy for PhillyTC, as the team prepares itself to run a solid
November and have an outstanding race at the Rothman Institute 8k in the
City of Brotherly Love! The field for Rothman is always stacked and the
course is flat and fast. Almost the entire distance corp for PhillyTC
will lace up the racing flats on that day - scheduled for November 24th.
The team will spend the rest of November sharpening their racing fitness
and preparing to put on - what will hopefully be - an impressive performance
in front of the home crowd. If you can make it to the Art Museum area
on the morning of November 24th, you won't want to miss this great race!
Stay tuned for updates on the team's racing readiness
as November rambles along!

Chili, NY & Scranton, PA
As Matty Byrne embarked on his inaugural 26.2 mile voyage on the roads
of Scranton, the rest of the guys ran through the fields and hills of
upstate New York. We shall ask Matty for a full account as soon as possible,
but he> ran a very solid 2:28.32 in his first marathon ever. On pace
to hit the Olympic Trials Qualifying Standard (2:22.00) through approximately
20 miles, Matty learned first-hand how true all the talk about the "Wall"
can be. But like a true PhillyTC boy, he held on and ran tough - finishing
6th overall. Great race, Matty! Now that he has the first one under his
belt and gained the necessary knowledge about the distance, we know
Matty has all the tools to get the qualifier. We shall await his next
marathon.
Meanwhile, back in New York, the rest of the team was
dealing with some pretty adverse conditions - despite the fact that their
race was much shorter than Matty's. With excellent competition like the
Nike-sponsored Indiana Invaders and a team from Waterloo, Ontario - PhillyTC
finished 4th overall as a team. Great races from Ted Callinan (9th overall
in 25:10), Bryan Poerner (11th overall in 25:26), Brian Gallagher (13th
overall in 25:32), Mike Walker (19th overall in 25:55) and Tim Callinan
(33rd overall in 26:54) solidified a good showing for PhillyTC. Placing
four men between 9th and 19th places was especially helpful. In another
good sign, Chris Cummins also showed that he is on the right path. We
shall see him run faster and faster in the near future. Thanks to Karen
for helping us out at the race, taking pictures, and for simply agreeing
to accompany her husband to a cross country race not long after their
wedding! You guys are awesome!
Finally, thanks to everyone who showed up at Silk City!
We had a great time and appreciate the support. It's not often that you
will be in a bar and get to see race videos on the wall while you dance
and drink! We had a lot of fun and hope you did too! Check back in soon.
We're not sure if the schedule will find PhillyTC at Mayor's Cup definitely,
but if not, we will be out en masse at the Rothman 8k.

The team's name is the site of this week's news, as there is no racing
to report. That is, of course, if you don't count PhillyTC member Mike
Walker - who is racing to the altar this weekend! CONGRATS, MIKE! May
you and your bride have a happy, healthy life together. May your nuptials
spur you on to new PRs!
As a team, PhillyTC is enjoying an off weekend before
heading up to Chili, NY - site of the Gennessee Valley Harriers Invitational.
The race features a tough course and an equally tough field - with past
team attendees as Montreal Olympique and Westchester Puma amongst others.
As PhillyTC toes the line for 8 kilometers of cross country, Matty B.
will be toeing the line for a significantly longer 26.2 miles. Good luck
in the Steamtown Marathon,
Matty! Wish we could be there. Individually, Ted Callinan will be racing
this Sunday (October 6) morning in the Ben Franklin Bridge Challenge 4
Miler. If you happen to be there and see a PhillyTC member, say hi and
cheer PhillyTC on!
What an eventful time next weekend will be for PhillyTC!
Hopefully, we'll be celebrating a good showing in New York and an individual
win in Scranton by bringing the hardware back to the city of brotherly
love and holding our second-ever benefit at Silk City! DON'T FORGET, FOLKS!

Great Cow Harbor 10k - Long Island, NY
Matty Byrne competed at the 25th edition of this high level 10k as his
last prep race for the Steamtown marathon on October 13th. With names
like Clint Wells and the most consistent American marathoner of the last
three to four years - Rod DeHaven - in the race, Matty held his own by
finishing eighth overall in 31:53. And when Matty cuts his mileage back
as the marathoner gets closer, his speed will certainly sharpen. Make
sure you check the Web site frequently. PhillyTC is considering running
a few open guys at Paul Short. But the next big date for the ENTIRE team
is October 13th. Matty will be racing the Steamtown Marathon in Scranton,
PA. The rest of the men's team will be racing the Gennessee Valley Invitational
cross country race in Chili, NY. And all present members, future members,
fans, and supporters of the team will be hanging out later that night
at Silk City! Don't forget - the party starts at 9PM!
Speaking of new members the Philly TC would like to welcome
local boy Eric Bonnette on board. Some quick info on the lad. He went
to Haddonfield Memorial High School where he was an 8 time Group 2 and
1 State Champ in NJ/XC, 3200, 1600, DMR. Spent his college time at William

Philadelphia Distance Run - Philadelphia, PA
With high expectations going into PDR, PhillyTC took its lumps in a long,
hard race in weather conditions that mirrored those of the race itself.
New PhillyTC member Mike Walker made a good first impression on the team
- finishing as the third team member in a time of 1:11.56. Bryan Poerner
finished second (1:11.55) on the team and received positive feedback from
his knee - which was ailing from his intense training. As a team, Philly's
off day relegated them to second overall. Individually, Ted Callinan just
missed cracking the top ten overall - finishing eleventh in 1:08.26 -
also a newly-established team record! Fear not, Cianfrani, your specialty
is only 1/26th of what you raced today!

A rookie with Philly TC, Timothy Callinan competed in his first race since
his Widener career ended last May. Despite a misdirection in the course
which tacked time on to his race, Tim was able to stop the clock at 16:08

as part of Team Allegra - out of Summit, NJ. The relay team finished second
overall in a time of 17 hours, 9 minutes, and 4 seconds. While we don't
have individual leg splits, Brian and Matty were reported to have run
strong legs for the team. Spread the PhillyTC love on the West Coast!

Matt Byrne competed in the Sallie Mae 10k race in Wilkes Barre, PA. This
was the first race of his fall season, and comes as he prepares to race
his first marathon. With the strength accumulated from a summer of high
mileage, Matt took the lead from the gun, pushing the pace through the
heat and over the hills. Three runners stayed close through 5k, but were
no match over the second half of the course. Matt won by over 30 seconds
with a time of 32:10.

Even though we're not officially in season yet, we have results!
Bryan Poerner PR'd for the second time at the five mile distance in as
many races. Poerner was chopped somewhere around 1 minute, 20 seconds
off his five mile time in the last two months!
In his first five miler of the season, Poerner hacked his PR down from
26:20s? to 25:11. He followed that up this past Saturday by finishing
10th overall at the stacked George Sheehan Classic (nee Asbury Park 10k)
in running 24:59! Awesome time and gives PhillyTC its fifth? man to run
under 25 minutes for five miles!
Megan, Chris Cummins, P.J., and Ted C ran the Sea Isle City 10 Miler.
Megan, P.J. and Cummins simply ran the race as a tempo run - helping us
get absolutely everybody sharp! Ted raced and won the sandy romp along
the South Jersey beaches in 53:00. PhillyTC is rolling! Tim Callinan went
down to Sea Isle to cheer for us. Brian Gallagher gave a speedy performance
on Saturday as well. Unfortunately, it was to run his cousin to the hospital
who wasn't feeling well..
